Donald Trump during his visit to Ireland for diplomatic meetings and the Irish Open golf tournament.

Trump Heads to Ireland as Iran War and U.S. Politics Shape Visit

U.S. President Donald Trump is set to meet Ireland’s political leaders on Saturday before attending a major golf tournament, combining diplomatic engagements with a familiar weekend activity at one of his company’s properties.

Trump’s 48-hour visit comes as his administration remains focused on the war in Iran and as Republicans campaign to retain control of both chambers of the U.S. Congress in November’s midterm elections.

The president is expected to hold talks with Irish President Catherine Connolly and Prime Minister Micheál Martin. Although the trip is not an official state visit, discussions could touch on politically sensitive issues, including the economic impact of the Trump Ireland visit, Ireland’s position on the Iran conflict and concerns surrounding the wider Middle East crisis.

The Iran war has increased economic pressure on American households by pushing gasoline prices higher across the United States, making energy costs an increasingly important political issue ahead of the midterm elections.

Trump’s visit is also expected to draw protests. Anti-war and anti-Trump demonstrations have been planned in Dublin and near the Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg, where the Irish Open is being held this weekend.

Ireland has taken some of the strongest pro-Palestinian positions within the European Union. In July, the country approved legislation restricting trade in goods from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. The move drew criticism from U.S. lawmakers and the American ambassador to Ireland.

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin has largely avoided political disputes with Washington and stressed the importance of the economic relationship between the two countries.

The United States has a major corporate presence in Ireland, with American-owned companies employing roughly 10% of the country’s workforce. Successive Irish governments have encouraged foreign investment, helping attract jobs and significant corporate tax revenues.

Trump is also expected to have a more direct interaction with President Catherine Connolly than during his previous visit to Ireland in 2019. Connolly, who was then a prominent politician, had protested against Trump’s visit outside Shannon Airport.

Now serving in Ireland’s largely ceremonial presidency, Connolly has faced calls from some supporters to speak out against U.S. military operations and defend Ireland’s longstanding policy of military neutrality.

Trump’s trip also carries a distinctly personal element. The Trump Organization took control of the Doonbeg golf course in 2014, and the property is hosting the Irish Open this weekend.

The president is expected to attend the tournament and help present the winner’s trophy on Sunday, adding a golf outing to a foreign trip otherwise shaped by diplomacy, economic concerns and international tensions.

Including Trump, eight sitting U.S. presidents have visited Ireland since John F. Kennedy travelled there in 1963. However, Trump’s latest trip stands out for its combination of diplomatic meetings, domestic political pressures and an appearance at a tournament hosted at his own golf resort.
