Sindh CM Attends Philippines Independence Day Event in Karachi

Murad Ali Shah highlights trade, IT and social cooperation between Pakistan and Philippines

KARACHI : Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah attended the 128th Independence Day celebration of the Republic of the Philippines as the chief guest and reiterated Sindh’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations in multiple sectors.

The event was held at a local hotel in Karachi and brought together diplomats, business leaders, and members of the Filipino community, including Ambassador Dr Emmanuel R. Fernandez, Madam Alicia Kalaw-Fernandez, and Honorary Consul General Dr Imran Yousuf.

In his address, the chief minister extended greetings to the Government and people of the Philippines on behalf of Sindh, describing the occasion as a celebration of courage, resilience, and commitment to freedom and progress.

Murad Ali Shah said Pakistan and the Philippines enjoy friendly relations based on mutual respect and cooperation. He noted that bilateral trade between the two countries stands at approximately $370 million annually, with Pakistan’s exports making up around $350 million, reflecting strong economic ties and growth potential.

He highlighted Sindh’s role in agricultural exports, particularly rice varieties such as IRRI-6 and IRRI-9 produced in Larkana and other regions, which remain key exports to the Philippines.

The chief minister also pointed to growing opportunities in information technology and business process outsourcing (BPO), noting that the Philippines is a global leader in the sector. He said Sindh institutions, including the Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Human Resource Research and Development Board (BBSHRRDB), are exploring partnerships and knowledge exchange initiatives.

He further appreciated cooperation between the Philippines’ National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) and Sindh’s Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPD), saying such collaboration promotes inclusion and social development.

Murad Ali Shah praised the contributions of the Filipino community in Karachi, stating that they have played a positive role in the city’s social and cultural life through professionalism and dedication.

Reaffirming commitment to stronger ties, the chief minister said both countries can expand cooperation in trade, agriculture, IT, education, healthcare, tourism, and cultural exchange for mutual benefit.

He concluded by extending best wishes to the Philippine leadership and people, expressing hope for continued peace, prosperity, and strengthened friendship between Pakistan and the Philippines.
