Islamabad event stresses equal representation, safety and decision-making roles for women in media
ISLAMABAD: A one-day conference held in Islamabad highlighted the leadership role of women journalists in Pakistan’s media industry, focusing on representation in press clubs and unions, newsroom participation, and the challenges they face in the field.
The event was jointly organized by the Women Media Center Pakistan in collaboration with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED). Representatives from press clubs and journalist unions across the country attended and shared insights on issues affecting women in journalism.
Speaking at the conference, senior journalist and founder of the Women Media Center, Fauzia Shaheen, said that despite the expansion of Pakistan’s media sector, the gender gap continues to widen. She referred to the Global Media Monitoring Project 2025 report, stating that women remain underrepresented in key decision-making roles and only a small percentage of women reporters work in field reporting.
Former Chairperson of the Sindh Commission on the Status of Women, Nuzhat Shireen, noted that women journalists played an important role during the era of former military ruler Zia-ul-Haq, standing alongside male colleagues in the struggle for press freedom.
Former Secretary of the National Press Club, Fauzia Shahid, emphasized that self-restriction among women can limit professional growth, adding that many prominent women journalists have historically contributed significantly while working alongside men.
Senior journalist Farhat highlighted the importance of women supporting other women in professional spaces, particularly in leadership roles within media organizations.
Participants at the conference stressed that appointments to leadership positions in press clubs and unions should be based on equality and merit. Women journalists also shared recommendations aimed at improving representation and professional opportunities.
Senior analyst Zafarullah Khan suggested that a formal policy framework should be developed and implemented to address the real issues and demands of women journalists within unions and media institutions.
Speakers and participants collectively emphasized the need for equal opportunities, a safe working environment, and stronger representation of women in decision-making roles within media organizations.
The conference concluded with a consensus that empowering women journalists is essential for strengthening Pakistan’s media landscape and ensuring inclusive and balanced journalism.
