HOUSTON: Muhammad Saeed Sheikh, who was previously awarded Pakistan’s prestigious Sitara-e-Khidmat (Star of Service) by the President of Pakistan, was honored at a National Civilian Honor Celebration at the Hilton Houston Post Oak. During this recognition ceremony, Houston Mayor John Whitmire commended his decades of community service and presented an official proclamation declaring July 21 as Muhammad Saeed Sheikh Day.
Over 400 attendees joined the celebration. The attendees included elected officials, Consular Corps members, business and faith leaders, media representatives, and community members nationwide. State Representative Dr. Suleman Lalani was among the notable guests, and the proceedings were moderated by Dr. Aisha Khattak.
The event was jointly hosted by the Consulate General of Pakistan in Houston. It was also hosted by Sister Cities of Houston and the Organizing Committee. The Host Committee operated under Chief Host Syed Javaid Anwar.
Keynote speaker Mayor Whitmire lauded Sheikh’s 45-year history of public service. He highlighted his involvement in the annual Houston Iftar. Additionally, his interfaith outreach, disaster relief, and community development were highlighted. Mayor Whitmire also expressed his intention to visit Pakistan with Sheikh during his next term in office.
Earlier in the program, Consul General of Pakistan Muhammad Aftab Chaudhry welcomed guests. He commended Sheikh’s lifelong service and contribution to Pak-US relations. James Post, President of Sister Cities of Houston, underscored Sheikh’s work in fostering municipal diplomacy and cultural exchange between Houston and Karachi.
Chief Host Syed Javaid Anwar spoke of his 20-year friendship with Sheikh, thanking the President and Government of Pakistan for conferring the civilian award while praising the joint efforts of the organizing teams, sponsors, and volunteers.
Following an introduction by his son, Muhammad Samee Sheikh, and the screening of a biographical documentary, Sheikh delivered his acceptance speech. Expressing his appreciation to the President of Pakistan, Sheikh referenced the Junior Chamber International (JCI) creed—”Service to Humanity is the Best Work of Life”—and dedicated the honour to the volunteers, donors, and organizations he has collaborated with over the decades.
Sheikh’s four-and-a-half decades of community engagement include leadership and volunteer roles with the Pakistan Jaycees, Pakistan Chamber of Commerce USA, Houston-Karachi Sister City Association, Alliance for Disaster Relief, and Houston Iftar.
The event closed with a standing ovation from the assembled guests and dignitaries.
