FCEPL, UCP Call for Safer Dairy Food Systems in Pakistan

Stakeholders emphasize safe milk, nutrition security, and stronger food safety systems on World Milk Day 2026 in Lahore.

LAHORE: FrieslandCampina Engro Pakistan Limited (FCEPL), in collaboration with the Department of Food & Nutritional Sciences at the University of Central Punjab (UCP), organized a high-level engagement in Lahore to mark World Milk Day and Food Safety Day 2026.

The event was held under the theme “Strengthening Dairy Food Safety in Pakistan: Preventing Foodborne Risks and Ensuring Nutrition for All.” It brought together industry experts, academics, and policymakers to discuss improvements in Pakistan’s dairy and nutrition systems.

Speaking at the opening session, Dr. Kanza Aziz Awan, Head of Department at UCP, highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration. She said ensuring safe and nutritious food is both a scientific and societal responsibility, adding that such platforms help address gaps in food safety and nutrition.

Participants emphasized that formalizing Pakistan’s dairy sector is essential for improving national nutrition outcomes. They noted that structured supply chains and regulated processing systems can reduce contamination risks, ensure consistent quality, and strengthen consumer confidence in dairy products.

Representing the industry, Dr. Muhammad Aamir Iqbal, Head of Regulatory Affairs at FCEPL, said that food safety remains central to nutritional security. He stated that packaged milk plays a key role in ensuring quality and consistency, making it vital for Pakistan’s broader food security agenda.

Chief Guest Ms. Salma Butt, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister Punjab, along with Mr. Munir Hussain Chopra, Director of the Punjab Food Authority, stressed the importance of policy alignment, improved regulation, and stronger efforts to curb food adulteration.

Speakers also highlighted concerns regarding Pakistan’s dairy sector, noting that despite being among the world’s largest milk producers, a significant portion of the market still consists of unregulated loose milk. They warned that this poses risks to public health, particularly for children affected by malnutrition and stunting.

The event concluded with a call for greater awareness, stronger enforcement, and coordinated efforts to promote safe, nutritious, and regulated dairy consumption across the country.
