KARACHI : AI Lab at Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology (SSUET) was inaugurated on Tuesday by Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi, marking a major step towards expanding artificial intelligence research and technology education in Pakistan.
The state-of-the-art facility, established with the support of the Zakir Ali Khan Foundation, is designed to enhance research, innovation and practical learning in artificial intelligence while equipping students with skills for future technologies.

During the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Muhammad Imran Saleem, Chairperson of the Department of Applied and Emerging Sciences, briefed the governor on the laboratory’s facilities, objectives and future plans.
Addressing the event, Governor Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi described the AI Lab as a significant milestone in promoting research, innovation and AI education. He said the initiative would empower students with advanced technological knowledge and prepare them to meet future challenges in a rapidly evolving digital world.
SSUET Chancellor Muhammad Akbar Ali Khan said the laboratory would provide students and researchers with access to modern computing technologies and specialised AI resources. He added that the facility features advanced computing infrastructure, machine learning tools and collaborative workspaces to support hands-on learning and innovative research.
Dr. Imran Saleem said the AI Lab would strengthen collaboration between academia, industry and government institutions to address real-world challenges through artificial intelligence.
He said researchers at the facility will focus on machine learning, natural language processing and computer vision while analysing large datasets to improve decision-making and develop practical AI-based solutions.
According to Dr. Saleem, the laboratory is also expected to promote entrepreneurship by helping students and faculty transform research projects into innovative startup ventures. He added that the initiative has the potential to contribute to economic growth, improve quality of life and prepare graduates for careers in the rapidly expanding AI sector.
The university said the establishment of the AI Lab reflects its commitment to advancing research, fostering innovation and producing graduates equipped to compete in the global technology industry.
