Karachi: Ziauddin University’s Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery marked International Nurses Day 2026 with a ceremony centered on the theme “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” highlighting the vital role of nurses and midwives in strengthening healthcare systems and delivering quality patient care.

The event brought together healthcare professionals, nursing educators, students, and policymakers to pay tribute to nurses worldwide, while also honoring Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing.

Addressing the ceremony, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ali Shaikh emphasized that healthcare systems cannot function without nurses. He said nurses are often the first source of comfort for patients, describing nursing as a profession rooted in compassion, dedication, and humanity.

Deputy Director at the Directorate of Nursing Sindh, Fakhrunnisa, said nursing represents “profession, passion, and worship,” adding that the Government of Sindh is committed to strengthening the sector through training, faculty development, and institutional collaboration to enhance healthcare delivery.

In a special online message, José Luis Cobos, President of the International Council of Nurses, stressed the importance of empowering nurses through safe working environments, recognition of expertise, and inclusion in healthcare leadership. He urged global investment in nursing to ensure a healthier future under the event’s theme.

Tushnamaity Patel, CEO of Al-Hamd International Container Terminal (Pvt) Ltd and Pakistan’s first female rally driver, described nursing as the backbone of healthcare. She said empowering nurses is essential, not optional, and emphasized the importance of empathy in patient care.

Prof. Dr. Sumaira Khowaja-Punjwani, Principal of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, highlighted the growing demand for nurses and midwives, noting their critical role in preventing medical complications through timely and skilled intervention.

Dean Dr. Pamela Marshall underscored the importance of education, research, and collaboration in empowering nurses, stating that strong partnerships are key to advancing the profession.

The event also featured a panel discussion with leading healthcare experts, including Dr. Badil Das, Dr. Yasmin Amarsi, Afshan Nazly, and Fakhrunnisa, focusing on nursing leadership, workforce empowerment, education, and compassionate care as essential components of modern healthcare systems.

The ceremony concluded with a symbolic lamp-lighting ceremony and oath-taking session, reflecting commitment, compassion, and dedication to the nursing profession.
