US President Donald Trump speaks about renewed negotiations with Iran over its nuclear programme and the Strait of Hormuz.

US-Iran Talks Trump Says Nuclear Negotiations to Begin as Strait of Hormuz Deal Looms

US-Iran Talks will resume on Monday after President Donald Trump confirmed that fresh negotiations with Tehran would begin to address Iran’s nuclear programme and regional tensions.

Trump made the announcement while returning to Washington from New Jersey. However, he did not reveal the location of the talks or identify the participants.

Earlier, Trump wrote on Truth Social that Iran and several Middle Eastern countries had requested more time to complete an agreement. He said the proposed deal would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and reduce concerns over Iran’s nuclear activities.

When asked about a deadline, Trump declined to set one. Instead, he said he preferred diplomacy over military action because he wanted to avoid further casualties.

Diplomatic Efforts Continue

Trump has repeatedly warned that the United States could escalate military action if diplomacy fails. However, he has also continued to leave the door open for negotiations.

The conflict has disrupted shipping in the Gulf region. Iran has largely restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a route that carries about 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies.

As a result, energy prices rose sharply during the crisis. However, oil prices fell by more than 4% in early trading on Monday as hopes for renewed diplomacy increased.

Regional Contacts Intensify

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi held separate telephone calls with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Pakistan’s Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir. The discussions focused on ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Meanwhile, Iran’s official news agency IRNA reported that talks between Tehran and Oman had reached their final stage. The discussions concern issues related to the Strait of Hormuz.

However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei clarified that the negotiations involve a new maritime route. He said they are separate from any decision to reopen or close the Strait of Hormuz.

Israel Maintains Firm Position

Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen said Israel continues close security and intelligence coordination with the United States.

Furthermore, he warned that Israel would take military action if Iran resumed its nuclear programme or expanded its ballistic missile capabilities.

Last week, Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met in Washington to discuss diplomatic, economic and military options. Meanwhile, Iran continues to deny that it is pursuing nuclear weapons.
