Karachi: Unilever Pakistan has introduced its new strategy, “Sustainability Accelerated,” to promote immediate actions toward sustainability. This initiative emphasizes climate action, plastic reuse, and economic development.

Mayor Murtaza Wahab Highlights Need for Sustainability

Speaking at the event, Karachi’s Mayor, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, stressed that Pakistani cities must prioritize sustainability. He stated, “Unilever’s ‘Sustainability Accelerated’ addresses environmental challenges and enhances our economy, which is crucial for the prosperity of our people. I am hopeful we can create a more sustainable future together.”

Partnerships to Drive Pakistan’s Sustainability Agenda

The event emphasized the role of partnerships among companies, government, and communities in advancing Pakistan’s sustainability goals. Mayor Wahab underscored the need for immediate solutions and voiced his support for public-private partnerships as a pathway to enduring environmental protection.

Inviting Private Sector Support

Despite facing financial constraints, Mayor Wahab invited the private sector to contribute to local municipal services. He assured that the government would support eco-friendly projects such as water recycling, solar energy, and public space enhancements.

Unilever’s CEO Calls for Joint Efforts to Reduce Plastic Waste

Unilever CEO Amir Paracha highlighted the growing awareness of plastic’s environmental impact. He noted that consumers, retailers, and manufacturers are collaborating to cut down on plastic usage. Over the past four years, Unilever has collected and reused more than 100% of the plastic from its products, achieving zero-plastic-waste status. Paracha emphasized the importance of both private sector and government cooperation in tackling plastic waste effectively.

Commitment to a Circular Economy

Paracha acknowledged the government’s progress in environmental initiatives and reiterated the need for public-private partnerships. Unilever’s two-decade commitment to sustainability has strengthened its brand. With “Sustainability Accelerated,” the company links business growth directly to eco-friendly practices.

Event Unveils Unilever’s Climate Action Plan

Held at Unilever’s headquarters, the event gathered key stakeholders, officials, and industry leaders to discuss Unilever’s new approach. Paracha highlighted the importance of the company’s commitment, stating, “I believe business should be a positive force in society. ‘Sustainability Accelerated’ isn’t just about global goals; it ensures our business has a positive impact on Pakistan’s people and environment. We’re committed to improving our operations to reduce environmental impacts, create better jobs, and foster a circular economy.”

Key Steps for a Sustainable Future

Unilever also presented its climate action plan, detailing actions to reduce its carbon footprint and adopt sustainable practices.
