Pakistan-Italy Trade Crosses $1 Billion, Signaling Stronger Economic Ties

Pakistan-Italy Trade Crosses $1 Billion, Signaling Stronger Economic Ties

This milestone reflects not only deepening

economic ties but also paves the way for

enhanced cooperation and investment

Sarosh Mustafa

In a significant development highlighting the growing strength of Pakistan–Italy relations, Federal Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar has confirmed that bilateral trade between the two nations has surpassed the $1 billion mark. This milestone reflects not only deepening economic ties but also paves the way for enhanced cooperation and investment across key sectors.

Joint Economic Commission Meeting in Preparation
Speaking at a diplomatic event in Islamabad, Minister Tarar described the relationship as “progressing positively.” He announced that preparations are underway for the next session of the Pakistan–Italy Joint Economic Commission (JEC), which will focus on expanding collaboration in agriculture, textiles, green energy, construction, and digital innovation.

Steady Trade Growth and Key Sectors
Italy remains one of Pakistan’s top trading partners within the EU. Pakistani exports to Italy—especially textiles, leather goods, surgical instruments, and food products—have steadily increased. At the same time, Italian investments in Pakistan’s energy and manufacturing sectors are gradually rising, aided by regular business-to-business engagements organized by the Italian Trade Agency (ITA).

Labour Mobility and Diaspora Links
Italy also plays a vital role in labour mobility and technical exchange. Hosting over 200,000 Pakistanis, it remains a key destination for skill-based migration, strengthening people-to-people ties and supporting workforce development.

Beyond Trade: Strategic Cooperation Expands
The growing trade relationship follows a series of high-level visits and strategic dialogues. Earlier this year, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi visited Islamabad, where both nations signed an MoU on migration management and labour mobility.

Further collaboration is underway in sectors such as climate resilience, higher education, cultural exchange, and food security. Initiatives like the OliveCulture project and university partnerships continue to enrich the Pakistan–Italy bilateral framework.
