Karachi University staff protest against suspension of benefits, demand VC’s resignation

Employees’ Alliance seeks judicial inquiry into alleged financial corruption of billions

KARACHI: Employees of the University of Karachi (KU) launched a protest on Friday against the administration’s decision to suspend various staff facilities, demanding the immediate resignation of the Vice Chancellor.

The protesting staff, under the banner of a newly formed ‘Employees’ Alliance,’ have established a protest camp in front of the university’s Administrative Block to press for their demands. Alliance leaders claimed that despite previous assurances from the Vice Chancellor, essential benefits—including house-hiring rent, departmental promotions, medical leave, leave encashment, and the Hajj lottery—remain suspended.

The Alliance further alleged massive financial irregularities within the institution, demanding the formation of an inquiry commission to investigate “financial corruption of billions of rupees.”

The protesters formally requested Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to take immediate notice of the situation. They urged the provincial government to announce a high-level inquiry commission that includes a representative from the Employees’ Alliance to ensure transparency and expose the alleged misappropriation of university funds.

The protest has significantly affected administrative operations at the university, with the staff vowing to continue their camp until their service benefits are restored and an inquiry is initiated.
