The university launched a series of events that will continue until August 14 under the theme, “Together for a Peaceful and Prosperous Pakistan.”
Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mujeeb Sahrai inaugurated the celebrations by hoisting the national flag atop the university’s historic main building.
Faculty members, officers, employees and students attended the ceremony. Afterward, participants sang the national anthem and joined a plantation drive to promote environmental sustainability.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Sahrai described Pakistan’s 80th Independence Day as a historic milestone. He said the occasion honours the Pakistan Movement and the sacrifices of its leaders.
Moreover, he said Independence Day offers an opportunity to reflect on the responsibilities that come with freedom. He urged citizens to work for Pakistan’s peace, progress and prosperity.
Dr. Sahrai added that SMIU has organised several programmes to educate young people about the country’s independence movement. Furthermore, the events aim to encourage students to contribute to national development.
The Vice Chancellor said celebrating Independence Day holds special significance for SMIU because Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and several prominent leaders of the Pakistan Movement received their early education at the institution.
He also encouraged faculty members, employees and students to actively participate in all Independence Day activities organised by the university.
Following the ceremony, Dr. Sahrai planted a sapling on the university campus. Faculty members, staff and students also joined the plantation campaign.
The Directorate of Student Affairs and Counselling organised the plantation drive as the opening event of SMIU’s Independence Day celebrations.
