As Nvidia expands into AI-powered personal computers with a new Windows chip, Intel signals confidence in its roadmap, saying growing competition is accelerating innovation in the global semiconductor race.
TAIPEI: Intel has described rising competition from Nvidia in the personal computer chip market as a “good thing,” as the battle for dominance in the artificial intelligence era intensifies.
The remarks came after Nvidia, the world’s most valuable company, unveiled a powerful new chip designed for Windows-based PCs that can run AI agents capable of performing tasks on behalf of users.
The development marks a direct challenge to traditional PC chipmakers, including Intel and AMD, as well as Apple’s laptop ecosystem.
“We Welcome the Competition,” Says Intel Executive
Speaking at a news conference in Taipei, Alex Katouzian, general manager of Intel’s client computing and physical AI group, said Nvidia’s latest move highlights the growing importance of personal computers in the AI era.
“If you take a look at what they brought to market, I think it’s a good thing,” Katouzian said. “It shows the importance of how critical the PC is.”
He added that Intel remains confident in its position in the market, citing its broad product coverage and strong customer relationships.
“We welcome the competition, but I think we’re going to do really well,” he said, pointing to what he described as a “super strong” product roadmap and new opportunities emerging in AI computing.
AI Era Reshapes the Chip Industry
Nvidia’s rise as a dominant force in artificial intelligence hardware has reshaped the global semiconductor landscape.
Its graphics processing units (GPUs), originally designed for gaming, have become essential components for AI systems powering data centres and advanced machine learning applications.
Intel, once the leader of the PC and server chip industry, has faced challenges adapting to the AI boom and competition from companies like Nvidia, as well as Asian manufacturing giants such as TSMC and Samsung.
Industry Moves and Strategic Shifts
Intel and Nvidia executives are both attending the Computex technology exhibition in Taipei this week, where competition and collaboration in AI hardware are major talking points.
Intel also announced upgrades to its AI data centre hardware and new partnerships, including collaboration with Taiwan’s Foxconn, as part of its broader strategy to regain momentum in the AI computing space.
Analysts See Limited Immediate Disruption
Despite Nvidia’s aggressive push into AI-enabled PCs, some analysts believe the immediate impact on Intel and Qualcomm may be limited.
Bloomberg Intelligence noted that while the move could increase competitive pressure, the complexity and premium pricing of Nvidia’s new offerings are likely to limit disruption in mainstream AI PC markets.
