Iwerks helped transform filmmaking, theme parks and immersive entertainment through a series of technical innovations. His work shaped how audiences experienced films and Disney attractions around the world.

He was the son of Disney legend Ub Iwerks, the co-creator of Mickey Mouse. Instead of pursuing animation, Donald focused on engineering and filmmaking technology.

Born on July 24, 1929, in Southern California, Iwerks developed an early passion for engineering. He later joined Disney and transferred to the Studio Machine Shop in 1952.

There, he worked closely with his father. Together, they developed advanced cameras, optical printers and special effects equipment for Disney productions.

Iwerks also improved the Circle-Vision camera system and the sodium travelling matte process. These technologies helped combine live action with animation in Mary Poppins. His work also enhanced projection systems used in Disney parks.

Later, he co-founded Iwerks Entertainment with former Disney executive Stan Kinsey. The company became a leader in giant-screen theatres, motion simulator attractions and immersive 3D experiences.

Its technologies reached nearly 300 venues across 38 countries. As a result, millions of people experienced new forms of cinematic entertainment.

Disney fans also remember another unique contribution. His hands served as the model for the Abraham Lincoln Audio-Animatronics figure in Disneyland. Those casts later became the standard for many Disney Audio-Animatronics characters.

Following his death, Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro praised Iwerks’ legacy. He said Iwerks combined passion, creativity and engineering excellence throughout his career. He also extended condolences to the Iwerks family.

Throughout his career, Iwerks received numerous honours. These included the Gordon E. Sawyer Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, an Academy Scientific and Technical Award, the Themed Entertainment Association Lifetime Achievement Award and Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

Disney named him a Disney Legend in 2009. The honour recognised his lasting contribution to the company and the entertainment industry.

Even after retiring, Iwerks continued preserving Disney’s history. In 2007, he restored several historic camera systems for display at The Walt Disney Family Museum.

At the age of 90, he published Walt Disney’s Ultimate Inventor: The Genius of Ub Iwerks. The book celebrated his father’s legacy and documented a key chapter in animation history.

Donald Iwerks is survived by his wife, Betty, his sons Larry and John, his daughter Leslie and other family members.
