Vietnam boat At least 15 Indian tourists die after vessel capsizes off Phu Quoc Island

Vietnam boat accident claimed the lives of at least 15 Indian tourists after a tourist vessel capsized off Vietnam’s southern island of Phu Quoc on Saturday, according to local authorities.

The boat carried 36 people. The passengers included 32 Indian tourists, three crew members and one attendant.

Authorities rescued 21 people from the sea. Meanwhile, rescue teams continued search operations to locate the remaining missing passengers.

India’s embassy in Vietnam said it was closely monitoring the situation. It also established emergency response centres in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to assist affected families.

The embassy said officials were verifying the exact circumstances of the incident. It added that local authorities were continuing search and rescue operations.

According to local authorities, the boat was travelling from Hon May Rut Island to An Thoi Port. It overturned about 400 metres from the shoreline.

Furthermore, local media reported that rough seas and large waves affected the area when the accident occurred.

Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s largest island and one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations. In recent years, it has attracted a growing number of Indian travellers.
