Gaza City: Hamas confirmed that Israeli forces killed Yahya Sinwar, the group’s leader in Gaza, during a military operation. Sinwar, a key figure in the group’s plans, reportedly fought until his last moments. Senior Hamas official Khalil Hayya praised Sinwar for his bravery, saying he “fired until his last breath.”

IDF Reveals Details of Sinwar’s Death

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) provided more information about how they killed Sinwar. A unit from the 828th Bislamach Brigade was patrolling Tal al-Sultan in Rafah when they fought three men. The soldiers did not immediately recognize Sinwar. The next day, they realized one of the bodies looked like him.

Due to booby traps, the soldiers removed part of a finger for DNA testing. After confirming it was Sinwar, they safely took the body. IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari explained that their forces didn’t know Sinwar was there but continued their operation. A drone spotted him, and a tank fired the shell that killed him.

Hostages in Gaza

Khalil Hayya stated that Hamas will not release Israeli hostages until Israel stops attacking Gaza and pulls out its forces. This remains a key issue as the fighting continues.

Hezbollah Joins Fight

In response to the conflict, Hezbollah announced it is entering a “new phase” in its fight against Israel. The Lebanese group said it has introduced new weapons, raising tensions even further.

Hamas Faces Leadership Challenges

Sinwar’s death has raised questions about who will lead Hamas. Analysts suggest that Hamas might pick a leader from outside Gaza. Khalil Hayya, the current deputy, could be a strong choice. Other potential leaders include Khaled Meshaal, Mousa Abu Marzouk, and Mohammed Sinwar, Yahya’s brother.

Rising Casualties in Gaza

Since October 7, Israeli strikes have killed over 42,438 people in Gaza and injured 99,246. On that same day, Hamas’s attacks on Israel killed 1,139 people, with more than 200 taken hostage.

US Response to Sinwar’s Death

President Joe Biden called Sinwar’s death a “moment of justice.” He urged Israel to take this opportunity to seek peace. Biden encouraged Israeli leaders to find a way forward without Hamas.

Conclusion

Yahya Sinwar’s death is a major event in the ongoing conflict. The war is likely to intensify, and Hamas is now facing uncertainty in its leadership.
