KARACHI: Adrian Hamilton Manns, chief executive of Oman-based SalamAir, has been nominated to lead Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and is expected to assume the role by the end of October, according to people familiar with the matter.
The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the nomination has not been formally announced, said security and other clearances were still being processed. The appointment had not been publicly confirmed at the time of reporting.
The proposed appointment would mark one of the first major leadership decisions at PIA since an Arif Habib-led consortium took over the airline’s management on June 29, 2026.
Airline Turnaround Specialist
Manns has led SalamAir, a Muscat-based low-cost carrier, since July 2024. Before that, he served as president and chief executive of Kazakhstan’s FlyArystan from April 2020 to July 2024.
He was also the founding chief executive of Africa-focused low-cost airline flyafrica.com, serving from 2012 to 2016.
His earlier career includes senior commercial roles at India’s IndiGo, South African Airways, Virgin Australia’s Pacific Blue and Indonesia’s Mandala Airlines. He began his aviation career at Air New Zealand in 1997.
On his professional networking profile, Manns describes himself as an airline turnaround specialist, highlighting experience in launching and managing airlines.

Challenges Await at PIA
PIA has faced longstanding operational and financial challenges, including persistent losses, an ageing fleet, inefficiencies and political interference.
Manns’ experience has largely centred on low-cost carriers, while PIA operates as a full-service airline. Leading the Pakistani carrier would therefore involve a different operating model and a broader set of commercial and organisational challenges.
The airline’s new management will face pressure to improve operational performance, strengthen financial sustainability and rebuild customer confidence.
If confirmed, Manns’ appointment would be an important step in shaping PIA’s leadership under private management. However, the nomination remains subject to the completion of the required clearances and formal announcement.
