KARACHI (Staff Reporter), October 15, 2026: Pakistan and Malaysia have significant potential to expand bilateral trade, investment, education, tourism and cultural cooperation, Malaysian Consul General in Karachi H.E. Mohd Yunus Ibrahim said, highlighting that annual trade between the two countries has remained around $1.5 billion over the past five years.
He was speaking at a seminar and dinner on developing Pakistan-Malaysia trade relations, organised by the Diplomatic Forum for Socio-Economic Development in Karachi. The event brought together members of the diplomatic corps and business community to explore opportunities for stronger economic cooperation.
Longstanding Relations and New Trade Opportunities
Yunus Ibrahim said Pakistan and Malaysia maintained longstanding friendly relations rooted in shared Islamic values, cultural heritage and mutual cooperation.
The two countries elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership in 2019 and will mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027. A series of trade and cultural activities is being planned to commemorate the milestone.
The consul general said both countries were reviewing existing economic cooperation arrangements to improve market access, reduce trade barriers and facilitate business partnerships.
He noted that closer engagement between businesses and government institutions could help unlock new commercial opportunities and strengthen economic ties.
Malaysia Airlines’ Return Under Consideration
Yunus Ibrahim said efforts were underway to facilitate the return of Malaysia Airlines to Pakistan.
Subject to the necessary approvals, the airline could resume operations by the end of 2026. A possible resumption of flights to Lahore is also being considered for next year.
The development could strengthen air connectivity between the two countries, supporting business travel, tourism and people-to-people exchanges.
The consul general also announced that a Malaysian trade delegation was expected to visit Karachi in December. The visit is expected to provide opportunities for business-to-business meetings and direct engagement between companies from both countries.
Business Leaders Highlight Untapped Potential
Addressing the gathering, Diplomatic Forum Patron and High-Q Pharma Group Chief Executive Officer Atif Iqbal emphasised the importance of direct business-to-business engagement in expanding bilateral trade.
He said the forum had organised seminars and symposiums to bring business communities together, identify commercial opportunities and encourage economic cooperation.
Iqbal highlighted potential for greater trade in Malaysian palm oil, Pakistani rice, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products, and agricultural goods.
He said bringing business leaders and diplomatic representatives together could help identify untapped markets, establish commercial partnerships and strengthen the longstanding friendship between Pakistan and Malaysia.
Diplomatic and Business Community Participation
Representatives of the diplomatic corps from Sri Lanka, Oman, Iran and Russia attended the event, alongside prominent members of Karachi’s business community.
Among the participants were Nadeem Polani, Basit Mandia, Hassan Manami, Ahsan Mehanti, Obaid Saleem Patel, members of the Yusuf Devan Company team and other distinguished guests.
The discussions underscored the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement and private-sector collaboration in expanding trade, attracting investment and strengthening economic ties between Pakistan and Malaysia.
