Waste-to-Energy: Karachi Students Develop Innovative System to Turn Waste into Electricity

Waste-to-Energy could offer a new solution to Karachi’s long-standing waste and energy challenges after two first-year electronics students from Aligarh Institute of Technology developed an innovative system that converts waste into electricity while reducing environmental pollution.

Muhammad Yousaf and Muhammad Shakeel designed the project, titled “Waste Management to Electric City Production System,” to transform plastic, wood, paper, and other waste materials into electrical energy. The system converts the heat and light produced during controlled waste combustion into electricity, which it stores in solar panels, capacitors, and batteries for later use.

The students said they conceived the idea after witnessing piles of burning waste across Karachi, which often release harmful smoke and contribute to severe air pollution. Their model features a vacuum and filtration system that captures smoke and separates carbon from harmful gases before releasing cleaner air into the environment.

The project also focuses on sustainable recycling. The remaining ash can be processed into construction blocks, while the extracted carbon can be used to manufacture pencils and serve various industrial applications, reducing waste and creating additional economic value.

Project advisor Engineer Hafsa Israr said the system has the potential to help tackle Karachi’s growing waste management crisis if implemented on a larger scale. She added that the initiative could support cleaner urban development while encouraging innovation in Pakistan’s alternative energy sector.

The students believe their project demonstrates how practical engineering solutions can address environmental challenges and contribute to a cleaner, greener, and more energy-efficient future for Karachi.
