The France captain ended the competition ahead of Argentina’s Lionel Messi, who finished with eight goals after failing to score in the World Cup final in New Jersey.

England midfielder Jude Bellingham and Norway striker Erling Haaland shared third place in the scoring charts with seven goals each.

The 27-year-old Real Madrid forward also won the Golden Boot at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where France finished as runners-up.

Mbappe strengthened his remarkable World Cup record by scoring twice in France’s dramatic 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place play-off on Saturday.

As a result, he became the highest scorer in FIFA World Cup history with 22 goals across three tournaments, moving one goal ahead of Messi.

Despite the individual milestone, Mbappe admitted he would have preferred to play in the final.

“I would have preferred not to be the all-time top scorer and to be playing tomorrow’s match,” Mbappe said after the tournament.
