UFC 330 saw Islam Makhachev retain his welterweight title after a unanimous decision victory over Ireland’s Ian Machado Garry in a tense five-round main event in Philadelphia.
The Russian champion used his superior grappling throughout the fight. His victory also extended his UFC winning streak to a record 17 consecutive victories.
Garry, 28, presented a strong challenge despite giving up height and reach. Makhachev quickly took the fight to the ground with a single-leg takedown in the opening round.
Garry stayed composed and returned to his feet without taking significant damage. However, Makhachev continued to pressure him with his wrestling.
Makhachev regains control
Makhachev landed a high kick in the second round that briefly stunned Garry. He then took the fight back to the canvas.
Garry spent much of the round on his back but again managed to escape and return to his feet.

The Irish fighter enjoyed his best period in the third round. He found his range and landed several heavy kicks to Makhachev’s body and lead leg.
Garry also avoided most of Makhachev’s takedown attempts during the round.
However, Makhachev regained control in the fourth. His relentless grappling once again limited Garry’s striking opportunities.
Garry falls short
Garry entered the final round knowing he likely needed a finish to win the championship. He pushed forward and searched for opportunities to change the outcome.
Makhachev remained composed and avoided serious danger. He saw out the final round and secured the unanimous decision.
All three judges scored the fight in favour of the champion.
“Ian is a great fighter, a good man, and I just respect him,” Makhachev said after the bout. “He gave me a hard time, but I still prove myself every fight.”
The co-main event also ended with a title defence. American-Brazilian Mackenzie Dern retained her women’s strawweight championship with a decision victory over Canada’s Gillian Robertson.
