Trump described the Pakistan-India ceasefire

as one of the most significant diplomatic

breakthroughs of his presidency

The Hague: US President Donald Trump has once again praised Pakistan’s Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, calling him a “great person and an inspiring figure” for his role in helping prevent a full-scale war between nuclear-armed rivals Pakistan and India.

Speaking at a press conference after the NATO summit in The Hague, Trump described the Pakistan-India ceasefire as one of the most significant diplomatic breakthroughs of his presidency. “It was the most important conflict because both countries already have nuclear weapons,” he said.

Trump: “I Stopped a Nuclear War”

Trump stated that a series of phone calls focused on trade helped de-escalate tensions in May. “I told both sides — if you fight, we’re not doing any trade deals,” he said. “That’s how we stopped a nuclear war.”

He revealed he had spoken directly with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom he described as a “great friend,” and warned him that continued hostilities would jeopardize ongoing trade talks.

Praises for Pakistan’s Army Chief

“I met the general from Pakistan last week in my office — Field Marshal Asim Munir — very impressive personality, a great man,” Trump said, referencing the White House meeting and luncheon held in Munir’s honor.

Following the meeting, Trump confirmed they discussed both India-Pakistan tensions and the Iran-Israel situation, stating, “Pakistan understands Iran better than we do. They are crucial to peace in the region.”

Islamabad Nominates Trump for 2026 Nobel Peace Prize

The Government of Pakistan has formally recommended President Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, citing his “decisive diplomatic intervention” during the crisis and his “pivotal leadership” in averting war.

The four-day conflict between Pakistan and India was triggered by a deadly April 22 attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) that killed 26 people. India blamed Pakistan, which denied involvement. Following cross-border strikes and Pakistan’s Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, the two sides agreed to a ceasefire on May 10.

India Denies US Role, Trump Reiterates Mediation Claim

While New Delhi denies any US mediation in the ceasefire and claims the resolution came via military-to-military talks, President Trump has repeatedly maintained that his intervention — through pressure tied to trade — was the turning point.

“Modi told me they wanted the trade deal more than war,” Trump said. “That’s how we stopped the killing.”

Future Trade Talks Underway

Trump also confirmed that early-stage trade negotiations with both India and Pakistan are ongoing. “We’re listening to Pakistan’s concerns and working toward a fair deal,” he stated.
