Taunton, 42, was driving on a Rhode Island highway in July when she witnessed a crash involving several teenagers. Their vehicle had hydroplaned on the wet road, prompting her to stop and offer assistance.
However, the situation quickly became more dangerous. As Taunton checked on the teenagers, another vehicle lost control on the slippery highway and moved toward the group.
Seeing the approaching danger, Taunton pushed one of the teenagers out of the vehicle’s path. Moments later, the oncoming car struck her.
The impact caused severe injuries, including internal bleeding, multiple fractures and damage to several internal organs. Emergency responders took Taunton to Rhode Island Hospital, where doctors told her that her recovery could take up to a year.
Despite the extent of her injuries, Taunton said she remained grateful to be alive. She also credited what she described as divine guidance with helping her cope with the traumatic experience.
