Scarborough Shoal was the focus of joint Chinese air and naval combat drills on Saturday as the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) carried out military exercises in the disputed area of the South China Sea.

The PLA Southern Theater Command said the drills took place in the airspace and waters surrounding the shoal, which China refers to as Huangyan Dao.

Military Cites Territorial Defence

The Chinese military described the exercises as a necessary response to actions by what it called “certain countries” that were undermining regional peace and stability.

However, the statement did not identify any country by name.

The Scarborough Shoal is also claimed by the Philippines, where it is known as Bajo de Masinloc.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Embassy in Beijing did not immediately comment on the military exercises.

Beijing Highlights Combat Readiness

Furthermore, the PLA said the drills were designed to improve combat readiness and strengthen its ability to safeguard China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights.

The exercises formed part of China’s broader efforts to reinforce its military presence in the disputed waters.

China Announces New Conservation Measures

In addition, China introduced a new policy for managing the Huangyan Island National Nature Reserve, which was established in September 2025.

According to China’s state news agency Xinhua, the regulations prohibit unauthorised fishing, mining, coral extraction, giant clam harvesting and other activities considered harmful to the marine environment.

Authorities also warned that anyone violating the new rules would face legal action.
