Russia Begins Nuclear-Capable Missile Test Drills at Kamchatka’s Kura Range

Moscow: Russia has begun test launches involving nuclear-capable missile systems at the Kura training ground in the Kamchatka region, with exercises scheduled to continue until May 10, according to a statement issued by regional authorities.

Officials confirmed that the drills started on Wednesday and are part of routine military training activities conducted by Russia’s Aerospace Forces. The Kura range, located around 500 kilometres north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky along the Ozernaya River, is one of the country’s primary missile testing and impact assessment sites.

The regional government has issued safety advisories, urging residents to avoid the area and strictly comply with restrictions during the exercise period. Authorities stated that the movement of civilians and any equipment near the site is prohibited for security reasons.

The Kura facility has been in operation since the Soviet era and is historically used for receiving and evaluating warheads from intercontinental ballistic missiles launched from other Russian test sites, including Plesetsk Cosmodrome and Kapustin Yar. It remains a key installation for assessing missile accuracy and conducting strategic force training.

Officials said such exercises are conducted regularly, several times a year, and may include both scheduled testing of new missile systems and training launches by Strategic Missile Forces personnel.

The development comes amid ongoing global geopolitical tensions and increased attention on strategic military activities by major powers.
