Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday reiterated Pakistan’s resolve to further deepen its longstanding partnership with Japan, emphasizing enhanced cooperation in development, technology, trade and people-to-people exchanges.

Speaking at a reception marking the 66th birthday of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito, the president described Pakistan–Japan relations as a relationship built on “decades of trust, mutual respect and consistent cooperation.”

At the outset, he requested participants to observe a minute’s silence in memory of the victims of the recent blast in Tarlai, Islamabad, and expressed solidarity with the bereaved families.

Highlighting Japan’s global standing, the president praised the country’s technological progress, discipline and cultural heritage, saying these values resonate strongly with Pakistan.

“Japan has stood with Pakistan in difficult times,” he said, referring to Tokyo’s support during climate-related disasters and its continued assistance in development cooperation and disaster-risk preparedness.

He noted that Japan remains a key development partner, particularly through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which he termed a symbol of sustainable and people-centred progress.

On economic cooperation, President Zardari said more than 80 Japanese companies are operating in Pakistan, contributing to job creation, industrial growth and knowledge transfer, reflecting investor confidence in Pakistan’s market potential.

Calling Japan a model of innovation, he said Pakistan seeks to benefit from Japanese expertise to strengthen institutions, develop skills and prepare its youth for future challenges.

Referring to Pakistan’s strategic location at the crossroads of regional trade and energy routes, he said the country offers significant opportunities for expanded economic collaboration.

“Pakistan and Japan share a belief in strong families, social harmony and respect for human dignity. These shared principles give our partnership depth and resilience,” he added.

The president extended warm greetings to Emperor Naruhito and the people of Japan, wishing them continued peace, progress and prosperity.
