Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday chaired a high-level consultative meeting at Aiwan-e-Sadr to review Pakistan’s evolving economic and energy situation amid global oil supply constraints and rising petroleum prices.

The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, along with key federal ministers and senior officials, according to an official statement.

Focus on Oil Prices and Inflation

Participants reviewed the impact of fluctuations in global oil and gas supplies on Pakistan’s economy, with particular emphasis on managing inflation and ensuring energy security.

Briefings were given by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik on measures to stabilise petroleum prices and mitigate the impact of rising fuel costs across sectors.

Officials also highlighted ongoing efforts to enforce fiscal discipline through austerity measures aimed at reducing expenditure pressures.

The leadership stressed the need for a coordinated national strategy, underscoring that policy decisions must prioritise economic stability while protecting public interests.

Regional Situation Under Review

The broader regional environment, including its implications for Pakistan’s security and economic outlook, was also discussed. The meeting examined potential risks to food security and supply chains in light of ongoing geopolitical developments.

Call for Coordinated National Response

The leadership stressed the need for a coordinated national strategy, underscoring that policy decisions must prioritise economic stability while protecting public interests.

Participants emphasised the importance of national consensus and stronger institutional coordination to effectively address emerging challenges.

Energy Conservation Measures Urged

The meeting also called for increased public awareness to reduce fuel consumption. Citizens were encouraged to use public transport and adopt shared mobility practices to ease pressure on energy resources.

Officials agreed that economic management, energy planning and security considerations must remain closely aligned to navigate the current challenges.
