Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany says he is in a state of “total calm” ahead of Wednesday’s crucial Champions League semi-final second leg against defending champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Bayern trail 5-4 following a dramatic first leg in Paris, widely regarded as one of the most thrilling encounters in recent Champions League history. Speaking a day before the decisive match in Munich, Kompany emphasized his focus on preparation rather than emotion.
“It’s actually a state of total calm — an inner tranquility,” he said, adding that his attention remains on fine-tuning strategy and finding the right motivational message for his players.
The 40-year-old manager acknowledged the importance of marginal gains, noting he is still searching for the “right phrase” that could provide his team with a decisive edge in a tightly contested tie.
Despite criticism over conceding five goals in the first leg, Kompany defended his approach and dismissed suggestions that he might overhaul tactics for the second leg—a comparison drawn with Pep Guardiola during his time at Bayern.
“When you lose, there’s always something to explain. When you win, you’re always right,” Kompany remarked, rejecting the notion of drastic tactical changes.
Bayern enter the clash with renewed confidence after recently securing the Bundesliga title, with Kompany highlighting strong belief among both players and fans. Defender Jonathan Tah admitted the first-leg result was unusual but stressed his excitement for the return fixture, emphasizing passion and enjoyment as key motivations.
On the other side, PSG manager Luis Enrique expressed confidence, drawing inspiration from past successes in Munich. He noted that his team’s previous triumphs at the venue add extra motivation ahead of the decisive encounter.
Given the high-scoring nature of the first leg, Enrique expects another intense and unpredictable contest, stating that neither side accepts inferiority and both will push aggressively for a place in the final.
With both teams evenly matched and momentum shifting, the semi-final second leg promises to deliver another memorable night of European football.
