Khaqan Waheed Khawaja Criticises Federal Budget 2026-27

Pakistan Awami Quwat chairman says budget prioritises IMF conditions over public relief
Chairman Pakistan Awami Quwat Khaqan Waheed Khawaja has criticised the Federal Budget 2026-27, stating that it has failed to meet public expectations and appears largely shaped by International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditions and fiscal constraints.

In a statement, he said the budget prioritises financial targets over public welfare, inflation relief, and sustainable economic growth. He added that despite rising inflation, unemployment, and increasing pressure on businesses, the budget offers limited relief to the public.

He noted that the concessions announced for salaried individuals are insufficient in the context of prevailing economic conditions.

Khaqan Waheed Khawaja further said that although the government has described the budget as growth- and export-oriented, it lacks a clear strategy to promote key sectors such as industry, information technology, exports, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

He said essential measures to attract foreign investment, strengthen local industries, and stimulate economic activity are missing, making it unclear how the proposed economic goals will be achieved.

Highlighting concerns over youth employment, he said the budget does not introduce meaningful initiatives for job creation, entrepreneurship, or skills development.

He added that while short-term economic stabilisation may be a government priority, the budget lacks bold reforms needed to break the cycle of debt and support long-term sustainable growth.

The Pakistan Awami Quwat chairman concluded that the budget does not align with the economic needs of the country or the aspirations of the people.
