Karachi: Pakistan’s transgender community has announced the second annual “Hijra Festival,” set for November 9 in Karachi, bringing together transgender individuals, civil society members, and international representatives. This landmark event, organized to celebrate and empower the transgender community, will be held at Frere Hall.
Festival Announced by Transgender Leaders at Karachi Press Club
The announcement was made at the Karachi Press Club by notable figures from the community, including Miss Kami Choudhary (renowned activist and Pakistan’s first transgender model), Dr. Sarah Gill (Pakistan’s first transgender medical doctor), Hina Pathani (President of the Festival), Bebo Haider, Raja Waleed, Moazzam Banawaz, and Bindiya Rana.
Festival Aims to Empower and Advocate for Transgender Rights
The festival, launched last year as the first of its kind in Pakistan, will center around the theme “Identity, Existence, and Empowerment of Transgender Individuals.” Speakers, including Kami Choudhary and Dr. Sarah Gill, shared the festival’s goals, stating, “This event provides a vital platform for one of society’s most marginalized communities to gather and celebrate.” They urged the government to uphold transgender rights and strengthen identity protection, calling for social and human rights reforms that address the community’s needs.
A Peaceful Celebration of Culture and Equality
Scheduled for November 9, the festival will focus on unity and peaceful coexistence, with community leaders ensuring it will be a lawful, respectful celebration. The event will pay tribute to late transgender community members who championed rights and welfare. Attendees can expect a vibrant celebration featuring transgender artists, traditional fair activities, food stalls, and various attractions, underscoring the community’s resilience and dedication to equal rights.
