Japanese Film Festival 2026 brings a fresh wave of cinema and culture to Karachi

KARACHI: The Japanese Film Festival 2026 has opened in Karachi, bringing Japanese cinema and culture to local audiences through a programme of six films scheduled for screening at selected venues across the city during September.

The festival was inaugurated on Friday, September 4, at the Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi, by the Consulate-General of Japan in Karachi in collaboration with the Pakistan Japan Cultural Association, Sindh (PJCA), and the Arts Council of Pakistan. The annual initiative is organised by the Japanese Consulate and the Japan Foundation to promote cultural understanding through cinema.

The opening ceremony featured a screening of Children of the Sea, a Japanese animated film that follows a lonely teenage girl who develops a profound connection with two mysterious brothers raised by the ocean. The story explores themes of human connection, the sea and the mysterious forces that link people to the natural world.

The festival programme offers audiences six films representing different genres and storytelling styles from Japan. Organisers said screenings will continue throughout September at selected locations in Karachi, giving film enthusiasts an opportunity to experience Japanese animation, storytelling and contemporary cultural themes.

More than a film event, the Japanese Film Festival also highlights the growing cultural links between Japan and Pakistan. Cinema has played an important role in introducing Japanese art, popular culture and creative traditions to audiences around the world, while initiatives such as the festival provide opportunities for cultural exchange in Pakistan.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Consul General HATTORI Masaru welcomed the enthusiastic response from the audience and highlighted the wider cultural value of cinema. He expressed hope that the festival would give visitors meaningful experiences, lasting memories and new perspectives.

The event also featured remarks from Shahzeen Khan, an animator associated with The Glassworker. She spoke about the influence Japanese anime and cultural events had on the beginning of her creative journey.

Khan also acknowledged the Consulate-General of Japan’s continued support for Pakistan’s growing pop-culture community. She highlighted initiatives such as Geek Haven and her involvement with the pop-culture group Shonen Infinity, describing such platforms as an important source of inspiration for emerging artists and storytellers.

The festival reflects the expanding interest in Japanese popular culture among young Pakistani audiences, particularly in animation, visual storytelling and creative arts. Through its September screenings, organisers hope to strengthen people-to-people connections and encourage a deeper appreciation of Japanese culture.

The Japanese Film Festival 2026 is expected to continue attracting cinema lovers, animation enthusiasts and members of Karachi’s creative community as the remaining films are screened at selected venues across the city.
