Iran Air Defence Report Says Tehran to Receive Chinese Missile Systems

Iran Air Defence could soon receive a major upgrade. Reuters reported that Iran expects the first shipment of Chinese-made shoulder-fired missile systems within weeks, citing three sources familiar with the agreement.

The reported deal is worth between $60 million and $70 million. It includes 300 to 400 man-portable air defence systems (MANPADS). The shipment reportedly includes QW-12 and FN-16 missile systems.

According to the sources, Iran signed the agreement with Zhongqing Baoshang International Investment, a Hong Kong-based company. The company reportedly acted as an intermediary between Tehran and the Chinese supplier.

China Denies the Report

However, China’s Foreign Ministry rejected the report. A spokesperson called the claims “completely groundless.” The ministry also said China continues to support peace and diplomatic solutions.

Meanwhile, Zhong Qing Bao Shang Group did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry also did not issue an immediate response.

Iran Rebuilds Military Capabilities

Reuters said Iran wants to strengthen its military after months of conflict with the United States and Israel. The fighting exposed weaknesses in Iran’s air-defence network.

Military experts say portable missile systems can improve short-range protection. Small teams can deploy these weapons quickly. They can also move them easily to protect military bases, energy facilities and other sensitive sites.

Delivery Route Still Unclear

The sources said shipments would leave Urumqi in western China. They would then pass through Pakistan before reaching Iran.

However, the sources said delivery dates and shipment sizes could still change.

Pakistan’s military media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), rejected reports linking Pakistan to the transfers. It called the claims “absolutely concocted and false.”

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry did not immediately comment.

Security Sources Highlight Wider Cooperation

Furthermore, a European security source told Reuters that officials knew about discussions involving possible sales of QW-12, QW-18 and QW-19 missile systems to Iran.

Another security source in the Middle East said Iran had shown interest in QW-12 and QW-18 systems. However, the source could not confirm that both sides had completed a final agreement.

Reuters also reported that two Western intelligence sources and an Iranian official said Tehran had explored overland routes for moving Chinese military supplies and dual-use equipment.

The reported purchase highlights Iran’s efforts to modernise its military despite years of international sanctions. Reuters previously reported that Tehran was also pursuing Chinese anti-ship cruise missiles. However, the news agency could not confirm whether that agreement was finalised.
