Houston Community Leader Mohammad Saeed Sheikh Awarded Sitara-e-Khidmat

Special Correspondent

Houston, Texas: On Pakistan’s 78th Independence Day, the President of Pakistan conferred the prestigious Sitara-e-Khidmat (Star of Excellence) on Mohammad Saeed Sheikh, recognizing his more than four decades of extraordinary service to Pakistan and the global Pakistani diaspora.

A Lifetime of Service and Leadership

Sheikh, a prominent community leader since the 1980s, currently serves as President of the Houston-Karachi Sister City Association. His 45-year journey has been marked by humanitarian relief efforts, interfaith collaboration, and cultural diplomacy, strengthening ties across communities in both Pakistan and the United States.

In 2011, Sheikh founded the Alliance for Disaster Relief, uniting over 40 organizations to deliver millions of dollars in aid. Under his leadership, the alliance has provided life-saving support during major crises, including:

  • COVID-19 pandemic
  • 2022 Pakistan floods
  • Thar drought
  • Hurricane Harvey
  • Houston freeze

These initiatives benefited more than 100,000 people worldwide, delivering medical care, food supplies, and permanent housing.

Champion of Interfaith Harmony

Sheikh has also been a leading advocate for interfaith dialogue and unity. One of his most impactful initiatives is the Annual Houston Iftar, co-hosted with the city’s mayor. Today, it is recognized as the largest Muslim interfaith gathering in the United States, symbolizing inclusivity and cultural harmony.

Awards and Global Recognition

Over the years, Sheikh’s contributions have been widely honored, including:

  • U.S. President’s Lifetime Achievement Award (2018)
  • Sister Cities International “Volunteer of the Year Award” (2021)
  • World Affairs Council “Global Leader of Influence Award” (2022)
  • Global Seven Outstanding Humanitarian Award (2023)
  • One World Award (2024)

The Sitara-e-Khidmat is one of Pakistan’s highest civilian honors, presented to individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to public service, humanitarianism, and national development.

Pride for the Pakistani-American Community

For Houston’s Pakistani-American community, this award is not only a tribute to Sheikh’s lifelong dedication but also a moment of collective pride, reflecting the diaspora’s growing role in strengthening Pakistan’s image on the global stage.
