HBL MfB, SUPARCO Launch Pakistan’s First Satellite-Driven Agri-Lending Pilot

Landmark agreement introduces space-based

analytics to agriculture financing, Pilot

project in Okara to revolutionize assessment

Islamabad: In a groundbreaking move for Pakistan’s agricultural financing sector, HBL Microfinance Bank (HBL MfB) and the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce satellite-powered agricultural analytics into the lending ecosystem.

This is the first-ever collaboration between a financial institution and SUPARCO to deploy space technology for climate-smart agriculture financing. The initiative is expected to enhance farm-level credit assessments, reduce lending risks, and boost agricultural productivity.

Under the agreement, the organizations will roll out a pilot project in Okara District, one of Punjab’s most important agricultural hubs. The project will utilize high-resolution satellite imagery, crop health monitoring, yield forecasting, risk profiling, and a data-driven scoring engine to assess farmers’ creditworthiness. A secure API and interactive dashboard will allow HBL MfB to integrate this data directly into its loan decision-making processes, eliminating the need for manual field inspections.

Amir Khan, President & CEO of HBL MfB, expressed his enthusiasm:

“We are proud to be the first microfinance bank in Pakistan to collaborate with SUPARCO for climate-smart agri-financing. Satellite analytics will enable smarter, faster, and more accurate lending decisions. This partnership aligns with our vision to improve the quality of life for our customers through innovation, and we are thankful to SUPARCO for joining us in this journey.”

Zafar Iqbal, Member (SAR) at SUPARCO, added:

“SUPARCO has always been at the forefront of using satellite technology for national development. Bringing our Agricultural Geographic Information System into the financial sector is a proud milestone. We believe this will strengthen lending processes and contribute to Pakistan’s agricultural growth and rural uplift.”

The partnership’s next phase will include post-loan satellite monitoring, enabling the bank to track crop development, detect anomalies early, and enhance risk management. This collaboration positions HBL MfB and SUPARCO as pioneers in satellite-enabled agricultural lending in Pakistan, paving the way for smarter, data-driven financial services in the rural economy.
