England vs Argentina Key battles that could decide World Cup semi-final

England vs Argentina promises a gripping World Cup semi-final on Wednesday as Lionel Messi’s defending champions take on England, who are chasing their first appearance in a World Cup final since 1966.

Spain vs France Spain beat France 2-0 to reach World Cup final

The winner at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium will face Spain in Sunday’s final after the European champions defeated France 2-0 in the first semi-final.

Messi remains Argentina’s biggest threat despite turning 39. Meanwhile, England defenders Marc Guehi and Nico O’Reilly will carry the responsibility of limiting his influence.

O’Reilly described facing Messi as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He also called the Argentine captain the greatest player to ever play the game.

Kane and Bellingham test Argentina’s defence

England captain Harry Kane and midfielder Jude Bellingham have each scored six goals in the tournament. Therefore, Argentina will rely on Cristian Romero and Leandro Paredes to contain England’s attacking duo.

Kane’s tendency to drop deep could create space for Bellingham to exploit between the lines.

Midfield battle could shape the match

England expect Declan Rice to return alongside Elliot Anderson in midfield. However, Argentina boast a strong midfield led by Leandro Paredes, Rodrigo De Paul, Alexis Mac Allister and Enzo Fernandez.

Mac Allister expects a high-intensity contest with little margin for error.

Experienced goalkeepers ready for another test

Jordan Pickford and Emiliano Martinez could also play decisive roles. While Pickford impressed against Mexico and Norway, Martinez brings World Cup-winning experience after helping Argentina lift the trophy in Qatar.

Scaloni and Tuchel face tactical showdown

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni aims to guide his side to a second consecutive World Cup title. Meanwhile, England manager Thomas Tuchel hopes to end the country’s 60-year wait for another World Cup final.

The tactical battle between the two managers could prove just as important as the action on the pitch.
