Karachi: Member of the National Assembly and Pakistan People’s Party leader, Dr. Sharmila Farooqui, participated as the chief guest in a Breast Cancer Awareness Walk organized by the Radiology Department of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) at Karachi’s Sea View.
Raising Awareness on Breast Cancer in Pakistan
During the event, Dr. Farooqui addressed the media, highlighting that one in every nine women in Pakistan is affected by breast cancer. She stressed the importance of early detection, urging women over 40 to undergo regular mammograms and scans for timely diagnosis.
“A mammogram should be done at least once a year, and then every three years thereafter,” Dr. Farooqui advised. She emphasized the Sindh government’s commitment to providing top-tier healthcare services for breast cancer treatment, adding, “The facilities provided by the Sindh government for treating breast cancer are among the best.”
October: Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Dr. Farooqui also pointed out that Pakistan has the highest number of breast cancer cases in South Asia. She reminded attendees that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the walk aimed to spread awareness among women to encourage early diagnosis and proper treatment of the disease.
