“Tropical Cyclone 2 Threatens Sindh Balochistan: What You Need to Know”

August 30, 2024
0

PMD has issued warnings for widespread rain

strong winds, and thunderstorms in Sindh and

Balochistan from August 30 to September 1

Sahir Baloch

Karachi: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reports that Tropical Cyclone 2, potentially named Cyclone Asna, is currently tracking south-southwestward in the Arabian Sea, approximately 204 km (127 miles) southeast of Karachi. Forecast models suggest that the cyclone will strengthen slightly through August 31 before weakening as it moves westward, just south of Pakistan, until early September 1. By September 2, the cyclone is expected to weaken into a deep depression as it moves toward northeastern Oman.

Weather Forecast and Expected Impact

The PMD has warned of widespread rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms. Therefore, southern Sindh Province should prepare for severe weather through August 31. Similarly, southern Balochistan Province may face comparable conditions from August 31 to September 1. Heavy rainfall could flood low-lying areas and regions with poor drainage systems. Consequently, residents may experience localized evacuations, flash flooding, and landslides. Additionally, business, transport, and utility disruptions may occur, affecting roads, bridges, and regional airports. Stagnant floodwaters might also increase the risk of insect- and waterborne diseases, such as dengue fever, cholera, and malaria.

Cyclone Asna’s Development and Historical Context

Cyclone Asna originated as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal on August 16. If it forms, it will become the fourth cyclone to develop in the Arabian Sea in August since 1944. Cyclonic storms in the Arabian Sea during August are rare. For instance, cyclones formed in this region in 1944, 1964, and 1976, all of which intensified after emerging from land.

Karachi Public Holiday and School Closures

In response to the severe weather forecast, the Karachi administration has declared a public holiday for all private and government educational institutions on August 30, 2024 (Friday). This closure aims to ensure the safety of students and staff amid the severe weather conditions. Consequently, schools and colleges in Karachi will close. The Sindh government had previously announced school closures across various districts of Sindh to prepare for the cyclone’s impact.

Sindh Government’s Emergency Measures

To manage the potential impacts of Cyclone Asna, the Sindh Government has implemented several emergency measures:

  1. Emergency Response Teams: Authorities have deployed teams to high-risk areas to provide disaster management and immediate support.
  2. Public Safety Alerts: Media and social platforms are issuing alerts to keep residents informed about the cyclone’s progress and necessary precautions.
  3. Flood Preparedness: Efforts are underway to strengthen drainage systems and clear obstructions to reduce flood risks.
  4. Fishermen Advisory: Authorities advise fishermen to avoid sea activities due to expected rough sea conditions.
  5. Shelter and Relief Services: Teams have established temporary shelters and mobilized emergency supplies, including food and medical aid.
  6. Transport and Infrastructure: Officials are monitoring and preparing for potential disruptions to transport routes and essential services.
  7. Health Precautions: Preparations are in place to address potential outbreaks of waterborne diseases and provide medical assistance.

Stay Informed and Safe

Residents should stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and follow official advisories to ensure their safety. For more information and updates, visit the [Karachi Administration’s official website] or contact local emergency services.
