Young adventure runner Haris Jamal is urging institutions, parents and the government to create more opportunities for children in sports and outdoor activities.
Eight-year-old Pakistani runner Mohammad Haris Jamal has emerged as a young advocate for children’s participation in sports, adventure and outdoor activities, calling for greater recognition and support for talented young athletes across the country.
Haris has been involved in mountain and outdoor activities since the age of three. During his annual three-month summer school holidays, he spends time in Pakistan’s mountainous regions, taking part in running, trekking and other adventure activities.
According to his family, Haris achieved an unofficial Backyard Ultra world record at the age of seven and has completed several other unofficial running achievements at a remarkably young age. However, his supporters say he has yet to receive formal recognition from major sporting institutions or government bodies.
Last year, Haris attempted to reach the summit of Khusargang. The expedition did not reach its final destination, but he returned this year after completing further training and preparing for another attempt.

During the latest expedition, his father became seriously unwell at an altitude of around 5,700 metres. The team was still below the 6,064-metre Khusargang summit and had to abandon the climb because of his father’s condition.
After turning back, Haris continued running towards Shigar. His supporters describe the journey as another unofficial achievement, with GPS tracking data and timing available from his watch. Members of the Sky Adventure team were also present during the expedition.
Despite his young age, Haris’s story extends beyond his personal achievements. He says he wants to encourage more Pakistani children to spend time outdoors and participate in sports alongside their education.
In an increasingly technology-driven world, his message focuses on reducing children’s dependence on mobile phones, laptops and other screens while promoting physical activity and outdoor experiences.
