MQM leader says justice has finally upheld long-held stance on factory tragedy case

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Mustafa Kamal has said that the verdict in the Baldia Town case represents a vindication of his long-held position on the incident.

Addressing a press conference in Karachi, Mustafa Kamal said that for years after the Baldia Town tragedy, MQM and its workers were held responsible. He maintained that he had consistently stated that the truth would eventually emerge.

He said the case decision is a “victory of his narrative” and paid tribute to the families of the victims, noting their acceptance of the ruling that attributed the incident to criminal negligence by factory owners.

Referring to developments in the case, he said the death sentence had been overturned, while two convicts, Rehman Bhola and Zubair Chariya, were acquitted by the Supreme Court.

Mustafa Kamal also said that when he realized the party’s founding leadership would not be able to serve the community’s interests, he separated politically, stressing that he did not commit betrayal but acted according to his conviction.

He criticized internal party leadership and questioned accountability within MQM, saying that if leadership fails to uphold character and responsibility, it cannot effectively represent public interests.

The MQM leader further remarked on ongoing political issues and alleged accountability gaps within the party, stating that leadership should prioritize the community’s interests over internal power dynamics.
