TASHKENT: The 11th Tashkent International Biennale of Contemporary Art, titled “Event Horizon”, will take place in the Uzbek capital from October 12 to 16 this year.
The opening ceremony will be held on October 12 at the Central Exhibition Hall, marking the start of a five-day programme featuring contemporary art, performances, masterclasses and academic discussions.
Works by international and Uzbek artists will be displayed at leading museums and galleries across Tashkent. The programme will also include a visit to Samarkand, allowing visitors to combine contemporary art with Uzbekistan’s rich historical heritage.
The biennale has been held every two years since 2001. This year’s theme explores the human condition amid rapid technological and cultural change.
According to the event concept, Tashkent is presented as an “oasis” at the crossroads of ancient caravan routes. The setting represents hope, renewal and the search for new meanings in a changing world.
Following the opening ceremony, exhibitions will open at several major cultural institutions. These include the Tashkent House of Photography, the Kamoliddin Behzad Museum of Miniature Art of the East, the Uzbekistan State Museum of Arts and the Ikuo Hirayama International Culture Caravanserai.
The programme will also feature artistic performances and masterclasses. An international scientific and practical conference will bring together participants to discuss contemporary cultural and artistic developments.
Another highlight will be the “Charxpalak” exhibition, dedicated to the 35th anniversary of Uzbekistan’s independence.
The biennale will conclude on October 16.
The event is also expected to attract cultural tourists visiting Uzbekistan during October. The combination of contemporary art exhibitions and a programme visit to Samarkand offers visitors an opportunity to experience both the country’s modern cultural scene and its historic heritage.
The 10th Tashkent International Biennale, held in 2024, brought together more than 40 international participants from around 30 countries.
