US President Donald Trump warns Iran of consequences as nuclear negotiations continue under a 60-day deadline framework
A US-Iran Deal process has entered a crucial phase after President Donald Trump warned Iran it has 60 days to reach a final agreement with Washington or face unspecified consequences.
Speaking at a ceremony unveiling a new Air Force One aircraft at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, Donald Trump said he expects diplomacy to succeed but stressed that the United States is prepared to act if negotiations collapse.
He said Iran must finalise an agreement within a strict 60-day timeframe, adding: “In 60 days, we have to make a deal, otherwise we will do things that won’t make them happy.”
The warning comes as United States and Iran prepare for technical negotiations aimed at turning a recently signed memorandum of understanding into a permanent settlement covering nuclear restrictions, sanctions relief and regional security arrangements.
Trump also highlighted concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, calling it a critical global energy route and warning that renewed conflict could disrupt oil shipments and international shipping lanes.
He claimed maritime traffic through the waterway has resumed, with hundreds of vessels now passing through, but cautioned that any escalation could threaten global energy stability.
The US president also thanked China for staying out of the dispute, saying major powers should avoid becoming involved in the Iran crisis as diplomatic efforts continue.
Trump made the remarks while unveiling a Boeing 747 aircraft gifted by Qatar, which will join the Air Force One fleet, using the event to outline his wider foreign policy agenda.
He also confirmed planned visits to Turkey and China later this year, including a potential meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the United States ahead of reciprocal diplomatic visits.
In separate comments, Trump praised Pakistan’s leadership for its role in supporting diplomatic efforts related to the US-Iran understanding, particularly highlighting cooperation during negotiations.
The US-Iran talks are now entering a decisive phase, with technical discussions expected to continue in Switzerland under the framework of the 60-day memorandum.
The agreement is intended to address Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief mechanisms, financial arrangements and broader regional stability, including commitments linked to de-escalation in conflict zones.
As negotiations advance, both sides face increasing pressure to convert the fragile interim arrangement into a durable political settlement before the deadline expires.
