Argentine TV outlet apologises after false report of Jorge Messi’s death sparks backlash
An Lionel Messi-related media controversy has erupted in Argentina after a television host resigned and several production staff were dismissed following a false report claiming that the footballer’s father, Jorge Messi, had died.
The incident unfolded during a live broadcast on Luzu TV, where host Florencia Peña announced that Jorge Messi had passed away. The claim was later proven false, prompting swift backlash from the Messi family and widespread criticism.
The Messi family issued a statement confirming that Jorge Messi is alive, under medical supervision, and recovering. They said his condition is stable and urged media outlets to avoid speculation about private health matters.
They also condemned the dissemination of unverified information, saying only close relatives had accurate updates and calling for “responsibility, prudence and humanity” in reporting sensitive issues.
Peña later apologised publicly, saying she had repeated unconfirmed information passed to her during the live programme. She also announced her resignation, stating she was “deeply ashamed” of the error and regretted causing distress to the family.
Luzu TV issued an official apology, acknowledging that sensitive information had been broadcast without proper verification. The platform confirmed that staff responsible for the incident had been dismissed.
According to Argentine media reports, the fallout also led to commercial consequences, with several sponsors reportedly withdrawing support following the controversy.
Argentina’s President Javier Milei also criticised the incident, calling it an “abnormal act” that violated an individual’s privacy and highlighted concerns over media responsibility.
The controversy comes amid heightened public attention on Lionel Messi’s personal circumstances during an ongoing international tournament campaign.
Lionel Messi has been competing for Argentina in the World Cup, where he recently delivered a standout performance, further intensifying global focus on his family situation.
Reports of his father’s health had already circulated in recent days, but the false announcement triggered widespread confusion before being formally corrected by the family.
The episode has reignited debate in Argentina over live broadcasting standards and the handling of unverified information in entertainment media.
