Traditional water pouring ceremony and cultural performance highlight Thailand- Pakistan friendship

Karachi: The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Karachi hosts a vibrant celebration of Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year, Karachi. The event brings together members of the Thai community, Pakistani business partners, diplomats, and distinguished guests to experience the joy and traditions of one of Thailand’s
most beloved festivals.

Songkran marks the beginning of the traditional Thai calendar and is celebrated across Thailand with water festivities, family gatherings, and acts of respect. The water symbolizes the washing away of misfortunes and the welcoming of a fresh start filled with happiness
and prosperity.

H.E. Mr. Surashete Boontinand, Consul-General of Thailand and Mrs. Sriprapai Boontinand, in Karachi, presides over the celebration. In his address, he speaks about the deeper meaning of Songkran beyond the joyful water play – emphasizing family unity, renewal, and respect for elders. He then leads the traditional water pouring ceremony, where guests gently pour scented water over the hands of elders as a gesture of reverence and to seek blessings for the new year.

The Consul-General is joined by Mr. Chotirat Komaradat and Mr. Halim Wainalai, Consuls, along with consulate staff who warmly welcome the guests, especially the kids.

The celebration also features captivating Thai cultural performance that showcase the grace and beauty of Thai dance and music. Guests participate in traditional Thai games, adding to the festive and lively atmosphere. The poolside setting at Avari Towers, decorated in colorful Thai style, provides a perfect backdrop for an evening of cultural exchange and camaraderie.

The event underscores the strong cultural ties between Thailand and Pakistan and demonstrates how shared celebrations can build lasting people-to-people connections.

Through Songkran, the Consulate-General continues to promote mutual understanding and friendship between the two nations.

The evening concludes with a sumptuous supper featuring famous Thai delicacies and drinks, including the renowned Thai milk tea, leaving guests with warm memories of Thai hospitality and the spirit of Songkran.
