Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah will inaugurate the first segment of the Malir Expressway, a high-speed corridor designed to enhance connectivity and reduce traffic congestion, on January 11.

First Stretch Details

The 9.1 km initial stretch runs from Korangi Causeway to Shah Faisal and marks a milestone in Karachi’s infrastructure development. The expressway aims to streamline transportation and improve accessibility for commuters.

High-Level Meeting Reviews Progress

The decision to inaugurate the project followed a high-level meeting chaired by CM Murad Ali Shah at the New Secretariat. Key officials, including Minister for Local Government Saeed Ghani, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, and other senior representatives, reviewed the project’s final preparations.

Largest PPP Project in Sindh

The Malir Expressway, Sindh’s largest Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project, is a three-lane dual-carriageway spanning 40 km. It connects Korangi Creek Avenue (DHA) to the M-9 Motorway (Superhighway) near Kathore, significantly reducing travel time.

Modern Features and Connectivity

The expressway includes:

  • Dedicated interchanges for seamless access to key residential and commercial zones.
  • Immediate traffic flow facilitated by a ramp in the first segment.
  • A connecting flyover from Korangi, set to complete within two months.

The Jam Sadiq Interchange construction and road rehabilitation at EBM and Shah Faisal Interchanges are progressing. Encroachments at Quaidabad Interchange have also been cleared for better connectivity.

Toll Tax and Security Measures

A toll plaza will charge Rs100 for cars/jeeps and Rs200 for heavy vehicles. Security will be ensured through traffic police patrols, fire brigades, and Rescue 1122 ambulances. Law enforcement will deploy personnel at key entry and exit points, including Jam Sadiq, EBM, and Shah Faisal Interchanges.

Traffic Rules and Restrictions

To maintain smooth operations:

  • The Shah Faisal Interchange to Shah Faisal Colony Bridge is declared a no-parking zone.
  • Only cars, jeeps, buses, and commercial vehicles are allowed, while motorcycles and rickshaws are prohibited.

Transforming Karachi’s Transport Landscape

The Malir Expressway is set to revolutionize Karachi’s transportation network. Once fully operational, it will ease congestion, boost economic activity, and provide rapid access to residential and commercial hubs.

CM Murad Ali Shah emphasized efficient traffic management and directed officials to address operational challenges swiftly to ensure timely completion of ongoing works.
