Pakistan’s UN envoy Asim Iftikhar Ahmad addressing the Security Council on Houthi attacks and the Yemen conflict.

Pakistan Condemns Houthi Attacks on Saudi Arabia, Urges De-escalation

Pakistan has strongly condemned Houthi attacks on civilian and economic targets in Saudi Arabia. Islamabad has called for immediate de-escalation and the restoration of a credible political process to resolve the conflict in Yemen.

Speaking at an emergency UN Security Council meeting on Yemen on September 10, 2026, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, described attacks on Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran as “reprehensible.”

He said the attacks were a “flagrant violation” of Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He warned that they also undermine efforts to achieve a peaceful and lasting settlement in Yemen.

Pakistan reiterated its “unwavering support” for Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, security and prosperity. Islamabad also expressed full solidarity with the Saudi leadership, government and people.

Ambassador Ahmad said Pakistan fully supports Saudi Arabia’s legitimate right under the UN Charter and international law to take necessary measures to defend its territory and protect its citizens and residents.

He also said Saudi Arabia has the right to safeguard its national assets.

The Pakistani envoy described the situation in Yemen as being in a “deeply alarming and dangerous phase.” He pointed to intensified fighting across several frontlines and continued Houthi attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

He also highlighted attacks on Saudi civilian and economic targets and the worsening humanitarian situation in Yemen.

Pakistan warned that these developments could have far-reaching consequences for Yemen and the wider region. Islamabad stressed that preventing further escalation and protecting diplomatic space must remain urgent priorities.

Ambassador Ahmad recalled that relative calm had prevailed in Yemen since 2022 following sustained diplomatic efforts. He warned that a return to large-scale fighting could further increase the suffering of Yemeni civilians and draw the country deeper into regional tensions.

“The immediate priority must therefore be de-escalation and restoration of credible political process,” he said.

Pakistan reaffirmed its support for an inclusive, Yemeni-led and Yemeni-owned political process under UN auspices. Ambassador Ahmad also praised UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg for his continued engagement with the parties and regional stakeholders.

He called for sustained international attention to Yemen’s humanitarian crisis. He also urged adequate funding for humanitarian operations and safe access for humanitarian personnel.

Pakistan condemned the Houthis’ continued arbitrary detention of UN and humanitarian personnel and diplomatic staff. Islamabad demanded their “immediate, unconditional and safe release.”

“Pakistan will continue to support all sincere efforts aimed at de-escalation, dialogue and a comprehensive political settlement,” Ambassador Ahmad said.

He stressed that such efforts are essential for lasting peace, stability and prosperity in Yemen and the wider region. He also urged the UN Security Council and the international community to remain united in pursuing these objectives.
