Karachi: Federal Interior and Narcotics Control Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Monday assured business leaders that the issue of increasing visa rejections by the UAE—particularly affecting Pakistani traders—will be addressed in his upcoming meeting with the UAE Interior Minister.

UAE Visa Woes Under Discussion

Speaking at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI), Naqvi acknowledged the concerns of the business community over frequent visa denials. He expressed hope that his dialogue with UAE officials would lead to a positive outcome. “Pakistani businessmen deserve seamless access to UAE markets,” he said.

Green Passport to Get Global Lift

Naqvi said efforts were underway to significantly improve the global ranking of the Pakistani passport within two years. “We want every Pakistani to feel proud holding the green passport,” he stated.

Minimal Disruption During Muharram Praised

Naqvi commended law enforcement agencies for peaceful Muharram processions nationwide. He highlighted a change in policy—mobile services were restricted only in high-risk areas, avoiding blanket suspensions seen in previous years.

Smuggling Crackdown and Coastal Security

Referring to smuggling as an “economic termite,” Naqvi said dollar smuggling and other illicit trade have been sharply reduced over the past two years. The Pakistan Coast Guard’s fleet is being upgraded with more patrol boats and better equipment for the 1,000+ km coastline.

Karachi Safe City Project on Fast Track

Naqvi said the long-delayed Safe City Project is now a top priority under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He pledged full support to fast-track implementation, calling it essential for curbing street crimes in Karachi.

CNIC and SIM Verification for Businesses

Responding to KCCI’s proposal for CNIC and SIM background verification access, Naqvi said the Interior Ministry will explore enabling KCCI to use these systems for employee screening.

Drug Rehab Center, School Surveillance on Agenda

Naqvi invited KCCI to join hands with the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) to establish a 300-bed rehab center in Karachi. He also assured strict action against the growing drug problem in educational institutions.

Business Leaders Demand Reforms

Chairman Businessmen Group (BMG) Zubair Motiwala urged the minister to end the “SHO culture” and ensure FIRs are registered without harassment. He proposed surprise inspections at police stations, better salaries for police, and merit-based promotions.

Motiwala also recommended appointing a liaison officer at KCCI to handle confidential complaints from the business community.

Karachi’s Water Crisis: K-IV Project Delays Criticized

Motiwala called the city’s water shortage the most critical issue. He criticized the repeated delays of the K-IV project, which has been redesigned 11 times and still hasn’t delivered the promised 250 MGD water supply.

Exporters Demand Tax Relief

KCCI President Muhammad Jawed Bilwani requested that exporters be shifted back to the Final Tax Regime. He also urged the use of AI-based surveillance at entry and exit points to combat smuggling and crime.

Bilwani said NADRA’s Executive Center at KCCI must be equipped with CNIC verification and criminal background check systems to improve hiring practices and prevent identity fraud.

Call for Continued Engagement

KCCI proposed that the Interior Minister visit every two months for regular interaction and quicker response to the business community’s concerns. Naqvi agreed, stressing that a secure and prosperous Karachi is essential for national progress.
