Meta Poland Seeks €250 Million EU Fine Over Fraudulent Advertisements

Meta could face a €250 million ($291.3 million) fine after Poland asked the European Commission to take action over fraudulent advertisements on its platforms.

Poland’s Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski made the request on Wednesday. He accused Meta of failing to respond effectively to repeated reports about scam advertisements.

Gawkowski said Poland’s national cybersecurity incident response team, CERT Polska, tested 122 advertisements. The team classified all of them as fraudulent.

According to the minister, Meta declined to remove 106 advertisements, representing 86.8% of the cases. The company removed only 10 ads, while it gave no response in six cases.

Poland calls for stronger action

Gawkowski said the findings showed that Meta needed to improve its response to online scams.

He also urged the company to introduce effective tools to combat fraudulent advertising, false claims and the promotion of illegal applications.

Meta had not immediately responded to a Reuters request for comment.

Legal pressure on Meta

The latest request adds to growing scrutiny of Meta in Poland. The company has faced criticism over its handling of fraudulent advertisements and has also faced legal action from Polish billionaire Rafal Brzoska over fake advertisements.

In April 2026, a Warsaw appellate court ruled that Meta could be held responsible for advertisements hosted on its platforms.

Meta has argued that it should not be responsible for fraudulent actions carried out by its users.

The European Commission will now face pressure to assess Poland’s request and determine whether further action against Meta is warranted.
