Apple M6 New 2nm Chip Brings Major Performance and AI Gains to Macs

Apple has unveiled its next-generation M6 chip and M5 Ultra processor, promising major improvements in performance, efficiency and on-device artificial intelligence across its Mac lineup.

The M6 will power the base-model Mac mini, while Apple will offer the M5 Ultra exclusively in the Mac Studio. Both processors build on the company’s Apple Silicon platform with stronger performance and AI capabilities.

The M6 stands out as Apple’s first chip built using a 2-nanometer manufacturing process. Apple says the technology improves performance while maintaining efficient power use.

The chip features a 12-core CPU with two super cores, four performance cores and six efficiency cores. According to Apple, single-threaded performance reaches up to 1.2 times that of the M5 and 2.4 times that of the original M1.

The M6 also carries a 12-core GPU. Each GPU core includes a Neural Accelerator for AI workloads. Apple says AI-focused GPU compute performance is nearly 30% faster than the M5.

In addition, Apple has upgraded the shader architecture, Dynamic Caching and hardware-accelerated ray tracing. These changes should improve graphics performance in demanding applications and games.

Apple says the M6 can deliver smoother gaming, including in demanding titles such as Cyberpunk 2077.

The processor supports up to 32GB of unified memory and memory bandwidth of up to 170GB/s. That is about 10% higher than the M5 and around 2.5 times the bandwidth of Apple’s first-generation Silicon chips.

Higher memory bandwidth allows the chip to process more data at once. As a result, demanding applications and AI workloads can benefit from faster data movement.

However, Apple’s chip roadmap could soon shift again. Reports suggest the M6 family may have a shorter lifecycle as the company prepares its next-generation M7 processors.

Bloomberg has also reported that future MacBook Pro models could use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips instead of M6 Pro and M6 Max versions.

Despite those reports, the M6 marks an important step for Apple Silicon. Its 2nm design, expanded CPU and GPU capabilities and stronger AI performance make it a substantial upgrade over the M5 and an even bigger leap from the original M1.
