Malaysia Hosts ‘ASEAN Chairmanship: Malaysian Food Galore’ Dinner

Karachi: The Consulate General of Malaysia in Karachi hosted a special dinner titled ASEAN CHAIRMANSHIP: Malaysian Food Galore” on September 16, 2024. This event celebrated two key occasions: Malaysia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025 and ASEAN Day, which was observed on August 8, 2024. The dinner also coincided with Malaysia Day, celebrated annually on September 16. Distinguished guests, including Consul Generals in Karachi, members of the Malaysian diaspora, and Friends of Malaysia, attended the event, which aimed to strengthen diplomatic and cultural ties between Malaysia, Pakistan, and the broader ASEAN community.

Malaysian Culinary Excellence Showcased

The highlight of the evening was a culinary experience prepared by Assistant Professor Mohamed Fadzly Che Omar, a renowned Malaysian chef from UCSI University, Malaysia. Chef Fadzly was previously in Karachi for the Jom! Malaysia Chalo! event at Dolmen Mall, which featured 12 Malaysian universities, Tourism Malaysia, and Batik Air Malaysia. His participation in the dinner extended the cultural exchange that began during the Jom! Malaysia Chalo! event.

In collaboration with Chop Chop Wok, a popular Pan-Asian restaurant in Karachi, the dinner showcased the rich flavors of Malaysian cuisine. Chop Chop Wok, known for its Pan-Asian food, is set to open a new branch in Dubai, where Malaysian cuisine will be introduced to their menu. This collaboration highlighted the Consulate’s efforts in promoting cultural diplomacy through food, a universal tool for fostering mutual understanding and goodwill.

Strengthening ASEAN Ties and Economic Cooperation

During his speech, the Consul General of Malaysia in Karachi thanked the guests and emphasized the significance of ASEAN as a platform for regional cooperation. He noted that Malaysia’s upcoming ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025 offers an excellent opportunity to further advance Malaysia’s leadership in promoting regional unity, economic cooperation, and shared prosperity in Southeast Asia.

The Consul General also highlighted the continued collaboration between the Consulate General of Malaysia and local businesses like Chop Chop Wok as a key pillar of Malaysia’s engagement with the Pakistani community. These partnerships promote Malaysian products, culture, and tourism while fostering sustainable economic ties. Additionally, it was announced that Malaysia will open a new trade office in Karachi in October 2024, further strengthening economic cooperation between Malaysia and Pakistan. The trade office will serve as a hub to enhance bilateral trade, investment, and business ventures.

Promoting Cultural and Economic Cooperation

The Malaysian Food Galore dinner exemplified the Consulate General’s commitment to fostering closer ties between Malaysia, Pakistan, and the ASEAN community. With the support of local partners like Chop Chop Wok and the diplomatic and business communities, the Consulate aims to deepen engagement through events that promote both cultural and economic cooperation.
