Kashmir Dispute Pakistan Rejects India’s Claims on Jammu and Kashmir

Pakistan has categorically rejected what it called baseless Indian assertions about the status of Jammu and Kashmir, saying unilateral actions cannot alter the region’s internationally recognised disputed status.

Foreign Office spokesperson Sajjad Haider Khan made the remarks while responding to media questions about a statement issued by India’s Ministry of External Affairs concerning a map of the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region.

Pakistan said the Jammu and Kashmir dispute remains one of the oldest unresolved disputes on the agenda of the United Nations Security Council.

According to the Foreign Office, relevant UN Security Council resolutions provide that the final status of Jammu and Kashmir should be determined in accordance with those resolutions and the will of the Kashmiri people through a free and impartial plebiscite under UN auspices.

The Foreign Office said official United Nations maps continue to depict Jammu and Kashmir as a disputed territory and argued that India’s official maps and unilateral claims of sovereignty do not change its legal status.

Pakistan also called on the international community to press India to end what Islamabad described as human rights violations in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.

It urged India to fulfil commitments concerning the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
